MSP is a floor only where procurement actually happens

The announcement and the purchase are two different events. Know which one applies to your crop.

What MSP is

The government announces a minimum support price for notified crops, based on cost of cultivation and other factors. It is a policy commitment to buy at that floor when procurement is organised — typically through designated agencies, for specified crops, in specified states and during specified windows.

Where the gap appears

  • Not every notified crop has active procurement in every state.
  • Procurement centres may be limited, with registration and quota rules.
  • Quality specifications can exclude a lot that looks fine on the farm.
  • Payment timing can be weeks after delivery.

How to check before you plan

Confirm three things for your crop and state: whether procurement is open this season, where the nearest centre is, and what registration and documents are required. Your local agriculture office and the state procurement portal publish this. Do it before sowing, not after harvest.

The honest comparison

Compare MSP net of transport and quality deductions against the mandi's modal price net of commission. Sometimes MSP wins clearly. Sometimes the mandi wins because the grade is high and the centre is far. The comparison is arithmetic, and it should be done with both sets of deductions included.

Questions people ask

Is MSP a legal right?

It is a policy commitment with conditions attached, not an unconditional entitlement at any mandi. Whether you can sell at MSP depends on procurement being open for your crop and location.

Which crops are actually procured?

It varies by state and season. Wheat and paddy are the most consistently procured; others depend on state schemes. Check the current season's notification.
